Sewing, crocheting and jam-building have not been connected with great thrills – but, it turns out, they work wonders for wellness.
A study has found that those who participate in artsandcrafts feel happier, calmer and much more energetic the next day.
The actions that your researchers stated also involved cooking, baking, performing music, painting, drawing, illustrating, digital design and creative writing.
All have as a common factor that they are comfortable and creative.
Many of the more traditional activities reported by the analysts are favored by Women’s Company members.
Janice Langley, chairman of the National Federation of Women’s Institutions, told the Daily Mail: “WI users have loved creative activities and crafts considering that the very first WI meeting in 1915, therefore it is good to hear this review has found some evidence that these interests may lead to increased wellbeing and creativity.
“We Might encourage everyone considering giving a new project a try simply to become involved.”
The WI, which counts the King among its customers, is experiencing anything of a renaissance. It celebrated its centenary last year and it has over 212,000 members.
The study occurred at Otago University, Newzealand, where 658 students were expected to keep journals in their experiences and mental states more than 13 days.
Dr Tamlin Connor, study’s lead author, said: “There is growing recognition in psychology research that creativity is related to emotional functioning.
“However, most of this work centers on how emotions benefit or obstruct creativity, not whether creativity gains or effects emotional well being.
“Engaging in creative behavior contributes to increases in well-being the next day, and this elevated well-being is likely to help creative activity on the same day.
“Overall, these findings support the growing focus on everyday imagination as a way of cultivating positive mental functioning.”
The analysis, that was published in the Record of Positive Psychology, found that the pupils showed more excitement and “flourishing” – a mentalhealth term describing happiness and meaning – within the days following creative activities.
